Which handset do I need???

A frequent question we encounter, particularly when replacing a damaged unit, is about handset compatibility. Opting for a new version of the same handset is generally the best choice, though not the only one. But what should you do if that model is no longer available?
Firstly, not all handsets are interchangeable.
The older 5-wire (4+n) analogue handsets were divided into two categories: AC call and Tone call. Any AC call handset could technically work with another AC call handset, and the same goes for Tone call handsets, but you need to know the connection conversion details between the two systems.
With more modern 2-wire handsets, it's essential to stick with the same brand, and sometimes even the specific family of handsets, as they use a form of digital language for communication and are not compatible across different brands or ranges. These handsets often require programming or addressing during installation.
Some systems use 4 wires instead of 5 or 2 wires on a 1+n basis. These are also brand-specific, as the method they use to reduce cabling is unique to each system. Unless you know exactly how they achieve this, you cannot mix them with other systems.
For our 5-wire (4+n) handsets, we can offer a range of universal handsets designed to work with both AC Call and Tone Call systems. Offering you various styles and features. These often include a tuning pot to adjust audio levels to match the system. Older carbon speakers have different audio properties compared to newer mylar plastic ones, and some brands used speakers with different wattages. Some of these handsets offer basic features, while others include additional features for added value.
Most include a connection conversion chart to enable you to check that it is indeed compatible with your existing handset before purchasing.
The good news is that if you can confirm the brand and connection terminals or part number of the existing or old handset, we can advise you on your options moving forward.
